A mechanism is presented explammg a reported heavy-atom-Induced magnetic field effect as a consequence of nonequihbrmm tnplet sublevel population m an mtermedlate euclplex. The tnplet exclplex spm polanzatlon IS induced by sublevel-selective mtersystem crossmg from the ewlplex trIplet to Its smglet ground state and IS decreased by an external magnetic field. The theory accounts almost quantltatrvely for the observed influence of magnetx field strength and lieavyatom substltuents
